Press Release

THE ARMORY SHOW 2023
Luis De Jesus Los Angeles Galleries Section
Booth 343
Javits Center, New York

Luis De Jesus Los Angeles is pleased to announce our participation in The Armory Show 2023, Galleries Section, Booth 343. The fair runs September 8 through September 10, 2023 at the Javits Center. Featured artists include: Hugo Crosthwaite, June Edmonds, Ken Gonzales-Day, Sherin Guirguis, Hector Dionicio Mendoza, Griselda Rosas, Federico Solmi, Vian Sora, and Edra Soto.

Central to the presentation are works that explore themes of migration, personal, and cultural history, expressed through painting, sculpture, and mixed media. Sculptures by Hector Dionicio Mendoza, and paintings by Hugo Crosthwaite and Griselda Rosas are guided by their personal experiences of the US/Mexico border region and the legacies of colonialism on indigenous and mestizo cultures. Federico Solmi’s paintings and Ken Gonzales-Day’s drawings call into question revisionist histories, exploitative actions and racial injustice to disrupt the mythologies that define contemporary American society. Edra Soto’s performative sculptures prompt viewers to consider cross-cultural dynamics and make visible the role that African diasporic traditions play in Puerto Rican vernacular architecture.

June Edmonds’ paintings explore the evolving symbolism of the American flag and her interpersonal connection to her African-American roots and the paths of family migration. Sherin Guirguis investigates states of displacement and the politics of place, aiming to make the often-invisible work of historically under- recognized women visible once more. Vian Sora synthesizes iconography from both her native, modern and ancient Iraq and adopted American cultures to create paintings that mine the struggle of the individual in the face of personal and social upheaval; and Evita Tezeno’s mixed media collage-paintings, depicting scenes of everyday life inspired by her family, friends and childhood memories from South Texas, animate her vision of a Black America filled with humanity.
