LUIS DE JESUS SEMINAL PROJECTS is pleased to announce Graham Caldwell: Inside Out, opening October 18 through November 20, 2008. An artists’ reception will be held on Saturday, October 18, from 6 to 9 pm.
Graham Caldwell’s sculpture is concerned with the nature of looking and of sight. The work is a kind of idiosyncratic natural history of seeing where glass and mirror stand in for the human eye and the mind’s many eyes. It is about recognition and distortion, scopophilia (voyeurism) and surveillance. Caldwell is interested in how looking and seeing can be extended by the telescope and microscope into the vast dark past of space and into the ferocious world of the microscopic—in the blurring and slowing of sight through liquid and thick transparent glass, and the zooming and multiplication of sight by convex mirror and lens.
The new sculptures included in Inside Out (the title refers to the idea of looking within the body) reflect Graham's interest in the forces of physics acting on soft biological forms, and the sublime and repellent implications of these intersections.
The outward explosion of impact and the draping pull of gravity are constants that bend and divide matter. In a way, Graham is engaged in taking apart and rebuilding natural forms, using glass as a surrogate for the viscid transparent grain of muscle and cell, and the delicate underlying clockwork of nature.
Graham Caldwell was born 1973 in Philadelphia, PA. He received his BFA (1998) in Glass from Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, RI, and also studied at the Academy of the Arts, Umeleckoprumyslova, Prague, Czech Republic. From 1992-95 he studied at Parsons School of Design/The New School for Social Research in New York. In 2007, Caldwell had a solo exhibition at the Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum and was also featured in the exhibition This Is My Country at Seminal Projects and the Aqua Wynwood Art Fair in Miami.
