Luis De Jesus Los Angeles is delighted to announce our participation in NADA New York 2023, Booth 2.05, with a solo presentation of new paintings by AARON MAIER-CARRETERO, titled a lobster named dinner.

AARON MAIER-CARRETERO: a lobster named dinner continues the artist's deep dive into childhood memories surrounded by his Bolivian and Jewish-American family and his pet lobster named dinner. In this series of paintings, Maier-Carretero leads us through different domestic spaces and familial scenes which function as the primary mise-en-scène for these memories of home, used to amplify character emotions and express moods in vibrant tableaus.

Taking some cinematic liberties, the painting, "couple" shows the interior of a large, bright open kitchen viewed from behind the stove on which a large red pot sits boiling over while a couple embrace at the far end of the adjacent dining room. In, “goodbye dinner," a family gathering in a darkened dining room replete with candlelight, provides a sense of mystery and foreboding (is the dinner in honor of someone present or his pet lobster?). In, "the fishing boat" the artist is depicted as a seven-year-old holding a massive fish in his arms during a fishing trip with his father, while the back-lighted figure walking toward us carrying a dinner plate in "black shadows white noise" is a striking dramatic study in contrast and suspense.

"A lobster named dinner continues with my interest in personal narratives,' says Maier-Carretero, 'but uses humor and a more playful formal approach to lighten up the content. I really did have a pet lobster named dinner – he wasn’t particularly special, but I loved him. He mostly kept to himself and when he died, we didn’t eat him, but we gave him a funeral."

Aaron Maier-Carretero (b. 1987, Maryland) is a Latinx visual artist who lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. He obtained his BFA from the School of The Art Institute of Chicago and attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. He has exhibited at the Queens Museum, NY; Sculpture Center, NY; The National Arts Club, New York City; The Art Institute of Chicago, IL; Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, IL; Phillips Collection, DC; The University of Maryland Art Gallery; the Washington Project for the Arts; and others. His work is held in the collections of the Phillips Collection; the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities in Washington, DC; The University of Maryland Art Gallery, College Park, MD; the Art Bank Collection, DC; The Pizzuti Collection, Columbus, OH; as well as numerous private collections.
