Atlanta Art Fair

Luis De Jesus Los Angeles is pleased to announce our participation in the inaugural Atlanta Art Fair. Our presentation in Booth C15 will feature new work by two prominent African American artists, Evita Tezeno (b. Port Arthur, TX) and June Edmonds (b. Los Angeles, CA), and Los Angeles-based Melissa Huddleston (b. Elm Springs, AR).

The collage paintings by 2023 Guggenheim Fellow Evita Tezeno depict a cast of characters in harmonious everyday scenes inspired by her family and friends, childhood memories, personal dreams, and moments from her adult life in Texas. Influenced by the great 20th century modernists Romare Bearden, Elizabeth Catlett, and William H. Johnson, vibrant scenes of joy animate her vision of a Black America filled with humanity.

2022 Guggenheim Fellow June Edmonds uses abstract painting to explore how color, repetition, movement, balance, and symbols can serve as conduits to spiritual contemplation and interpersonal connection to her African-American roots. Exploring the depth and breadth of color, Edmonds' paintings communicate a language uniquely her own, deconstructing symbols through repetitive linework and bands of color, visceral impasto textures, and a psychologically charged lexicon of brilliant color.

Melissa Huddleston's paintings are steeped in historic print and papermaking processes, and are inspired by the vibrant ecologies of wetlands and swamps and suffused with her ruminations on primordial origins. Through an experimental monoprint-style method, acrylic paint is transferred through marbling water baths to achieve layered organic shapes, swooshes, and swirls of opalescent color floating with mysterious levity.
