This two-part exhibition showcases the work of faculty who have been teaching at Scripps for many years, the greatly appreciated colleagues who have assisted as visiting lecturers and adjuncts, and new colleagues who will be teaching on campus for the very first time this fall.
L.A. Edge, situated at both the edge of campus and the larger LA county, brings together a group of artists whose professional practices cover a range of themes and media. The works elude thematic boundaries in favor of embracing the breadth and depth of our community at a time when the arts, and a liberal arts education, have never been more important and uncertain. Many of the works are intersectional in approach and respond to contemporary issues at the forefront of our communal concerns. Climate change, the environment, social justice, and critical race theory are just some of the themes explored in unique and responsive ways.
The works included are as varied as the fine arts disciplines offered at the college. Each artist approaches their practice differently, and across a wide array of media and interdisciplinary methodologies. When viewed holistically, they illustrate the importance of teaching critical thinking, a bedrock of a Scripps education and a valuable component in many contemporary artistic practices.
