The Chan Gallery of Pomona College is pleased to announce Painting: New Approaches, an exhibition synthesizing current and emerging voices from across the United States. The artists featured in the exhibition present new conceptual and material attitudes toward a highly traditional, historically rich medium. They wrangle with the legacies of painting by pushing the medium to new material limits and reframing our notion of what a painting may be. In doing so, traditional subjects such as portraiture, still life, landscape, figuration, and abstraction are reclaimed and reimagined. Hung salon-style, in a nod to the famed painting exhibitions of the 17th century Royal Academy of Art, Painting: New Approaches offers a rich exploration of innovative, experimental, and diverse practices that play with the medium and its many possibilities for interpretation and representation.
Collaboratively curated by Pomona College students SeoJin Ahn, Alex Dean, Alicia Garza, Austin Kim, Maddie Rubin-Charlesworth, Aja Trice, Scarlett Wang, Chan Gallery Manager Tricia Avant, and the artists themselves, Painting: New Approaches presents an opportunity for our community to interact with engaging artists whose work is shaping the world of contemporary painting.
