Luis De Jesus Los Angeles is very proud to announce that gallery artist June Edmonds has been awarded the inaugural AWARE Prize at The Armory Show for her solo presentation of new Flag Paintings in the main Galleries section on Pier 94, Booth 827.
AWARE: Archives of Women Artists, Research and Exhibitions is a non-profit organisation, co-founded in 2014 by Camille Morineau, art historian and specialist in the history of women artists. Its goal is the creation, indexation, and distribution of information on women artists of the 20th century. AWARE is partnering with The Armory Show to create an ambitious educational program, aiming to highlight the women artists exhibited by the participating galleries in the main section of the fair (Galleries). This partnership culminates with The AWARE Prize at The Armory Show presented to a Galleries booth focused on the work by one woman artist.
The $10,000 juried prize highlights the excellence of the artist’s work and the gallery’s courage to present a solo-female artist’s work in a market that has systematically undervalued art made by women.
“Edmonds was unanimously selected by the jurors, who coalesced around the discovery of her new Flag Paintings—a breakthrough body of never-before seen work by the artist presented by Luis De Jesus Los Angeles at this year’s Armory Show.”
The jury selected June Edmonds from a short list of five finalists which included Rina Banerjee, Galerie Nathalie Obadia; Yuko Nasaka, Axel Vervoordt Gallery; Aase Texmon Rygh, OSL Contemporary; Alexis Smith, Garth Greenan Gallery.
Jurors include AWARE co-founder and director Camille Morineau; Bloum Cardenas, Trustee, Niki Charitable Art Foundation and President of the Giardino dei Tarocchi; Simon Castets, Director, Swiss Institute, New York; Susan Fisher Sterling, The Alice West Director, National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington; Maura Reilly, Arts Writer and Curatorial Activist.
Curated by AWARE co-founder Camille Morineau, (Un)seen Scene is a focused walk through of 25 presentations of the work by women artists within the main section (Galleries) of The Armory Show. This selection of artworks presents a critical and subjective overview of the works by modern and contemporary women artists. Visitors are guided through the tour via an audio guide narrated by Camille Morineau, enabling all visitors to experience a feminist perspective by established and emerging women artists.
