Over the past year and a half, artists and collectors have donated 80 works by almost 35 artists that have been donated to The Cheech Center Collection since June 2022.
The latest edition of Cheech Collects explores different forms within the Cheech Marin Collection. It introduces photography and sculpture alongside paintings, prints, and the mixed media works for which the collection is celebrated. Also included are drawings and studies that give insight into the artists’ practices and the multiple forms an image or concept can take. In our third year, we delve deeper into Marin’s collecting, highlighting new acquisitions made by Cheech, both for his personal collection and for the center (as is the case with Marta Sánchez’s Retablo for Uvalde, which he gifted to the museum this year). In addition, the exhibition includes recent donations by others for the newly created The Cheech Center Collection of the Riverside Art Museum, which adds to our understanding of the evolving and dynamic nature of Chicana/o/x art.
New to the core collection of The Cheech are works by established Chicana artists Barbara Carrasco, Yreina D. Cervántez, Judithe Hernández, Carmen Lomas Garza, and Patricia Rodriguez. Also newly represented in the holdings of The Cheech are artists Rosy Cortez, Luis C. Garza, Ed Gómez, Gerardo Monterrubio, Jesse E. Rodriguez, Paul Valadez, and Perry Vásquez.
