Originally from Nyack, New York, Williams graduated from MCAD in 1975 with a BFA in painting and left the state in 1985 to pursue his MFA at the Maryland Institute College of Art. After graduating, he moved to Detroit to teach at Wayne State University, where he spent seventeen years before leaving in 2004 for the University of Delaware where he is currently a professor in the Department of Art and Design.
