Born 1989, Oakland, CA
Lives and works in Bronx, NY

Lex Brown is an interdisciplinary artist, writer, and performer. Through her work, Brown plays with the scale of personal and emotional experience in relation to large-scale systems of social and economic organization. In the process of dismantling personal internalized racism and sexism, Brown builds new characters, worlds, and linguistic relationships across media and platforms. Brown's work reaches the viewer through an experience of variance: fluctuations between humor and seriousness open up a space for personal connection and examination. Brown states: "I believe that language and emotion determine our world just as much as physical phenomena. If we refine our relationship to words, we can redefine our realities."

Brown received her M.F.A. in Sculpture from Yale University School of Art and her A.B. in Art and Archaeology from Princeton University. Brown has performed and exhibited work internationally at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Cleveland; The Hammer Museum, REDCAT Theater, 356 Mission, and Luis De Jesus Los Angeles in Los Angeles; The Kitchen, New Museum, the High Line, International Center of Photography, and Deli Gallery in New York; and MunchMuseet in Oslo, Norway. Brown is the recipient of various awards and residencies, including a Sommerakademie Fellowship in Bern, Switzerland; Skowhegan School for Painting and Sculpture in Maine; The Madeconia Institute in Chatham, NY; and Susan B. Whedon Award in Sculpture from Yale Universtiy. In 2013, she was the Coordinator and Lead Teacher at Thomas Hirschhorn's Gramsci Monument, produced by Dia Art Foundation in the Bronx, NY. Her first work of fiction, My Wet Hot Drone Summer, a sci-fi erotic novella that takes on surveillance and social justice, is available from Badlands Unlimited. Brown will present her first solo exhibition on the West Coast at Luis De Jesus Los Angeles in 2020.
