Los Angeles Mission College's Arts, Media & Performance (AMP) Gallery is proud to present "Now is Still the Time," an exhibition celebrating Black History Month and showcasing the works of five visionary Los Angeles Black artists. "Now is Still the Time" is a vibrant tapestry of artistic expression, exploring themes of identity, resilience, and the enduring power of Black culture. Through diverse mediums, including painting, sculpture, and mixed media, the artists offer their unique perspectives on the Black experience, both past and present. Deitra Charles skillfully encapsulates the spirit of Black joy and strength in her evocative portraits, inviting viewers into a celebration of resilience. June Edmonds, through her mesmerizing abstract works, unleashes a vibrant dance of raw energy, color, and form that elevates the observer to a heightened state. Jonah Elijah's thought-provoking paintings challenge our understanding of the past, weaving personal narrative threads that connect deeply with the present. Alicia Piller's mixed media sculptures delve into the depths of historical and societal meaning, exploring profound concepts through materiality. Lisa Diane Wedgeworth's exquisite serigraph prints beckon the viewer on a transformative journey through the various states of breath, prompting reflection and potential transformation. This exhibition is not just a celebration of Black artistry; it is a call to action. It reminds us that the fight for racial justice and equality continues, and that Black voices must be amplified and heard. "Now is Still the Time" is a space for reflection, dialogue, and empowerment, inviting viewers to engage with the art and connect with the rich tapestry of Black history and culture. We encourage you to join us at the opening reception on February 13th for an evening of artistic exploration and community connection. Meet the artists, enjoy refreshments, and immerse yourself in the powerful messages of "Now is Still the Time."
