THE DAVID OWSLEY MUSUEM OF ART ACQUIRES WORK BY JUNE EDMONDS

From DOMA's Instagram post, June 3, 2020:

We stand in solidarity with peaceful protestors worldwide in denouncing white supremacy, systemic oppression, & police brutality, & in saying Black Lives Matter. Some DOMA staff members will join President Mearns in Thursday's student-organized march from @ballstateuniversity to the @cityofmuncie City Hall, & we encourage you to consider if the event or others like it are right for you in demonstrating care for your community & a call for change in our country.

Today we share with you “Convictions I,” 2019, by artist @juneeecee [June Edmonds]. Art is about ideas, & the American flag has long been a powerful source of artistic expression, inspiration, conversation, & metaphor. The museum recently had the opportunity to add this important work to DOMA’s collection. Edmonds is a painter who examines spiritual contemplation & interpersonal connection through redefining traditional Western color theory, & uses color associations and symbolic imagery to create a discourse about power & disenfranchisement. About her “Flag Paintings” series she has said: “Fighting in the Civil War gave the formally enslaved agency and I see Colin Kaepernick and other athletes [protesting by] kneeling as a complementary battle. This idea has worked into my flags from the very beginning in contemplating what it meant and what it means to be American.” This summer we will proudly install this new acquisition in our galleries. We look forward to the time when you can come & see the painting in person, & reflect upon what it means to be American. If you would like to have a conversation about it, we will be here for that as well.
