Luis De Jesus Los Angeles is very pleased to present Evita Tezeno and Laura Karetzky at the DALLAS ART FAIR, Booth D11, April 21 - 24, 2022.

As the recipient of the prestigious Elizabeth Catlett Award for The New Power Generation, Tezeno has built a career as an acclaimed multi-disciplinary female artist. Her work is included in the permanent collection of the Dallas Art Museum, Dallas, TX; African American Museum of Dallas and the Embassy of the Republic of Madagascar; the Pizzuti Collection, Columbus, OH; Bill and Christy Gautreaux Collection, Kansas City; and Beth Rudin DeWoody Collection, Palm Beach; among others. In addition, her work has been acquired by prominent collectors, entertainers, media personalities and athletes, including Esther Silver-Parker, Samuel L. Jackson, David Hoberman, Denzel Washington, Star Jones, Laurie David, and Susan Taylor, among others. She has been awarded commissions by the Essence Music Festival in New Orleans, The Deep Ellum Film Festival in Dallas, and the legendary New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival (“Jazz Fest”), where in 1999 she became the first female artist to design its celebrated poster.

Recent solo exhibitions include Better Days (2021) at Luis De Jesus Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA; Evita Tezeno and Jas Mardis: Sharing Memories (2021) at ArtCentre of Plano, Plano, TX; Memories Create Our Yesterdays and Tomorrows (2019) at Thelma Harris Gallery, Oakland, CA; Memories That Speak To My Soul (2018) at Stella Jones Gallery, New Orleans, LA; and Thoughts of Time Gone By (2017) at Peg Alston Gallery, New York, NY.

Selected group exhibitions include Réinterprétation (2020) at C.O.A. Her work has been published and featured in numerous publications and media outlets, including Artforum, Artillery Magazine, Art Matters with Edward Goldman, Document Journal, Black Art in America, Collective Arts Network Journal, Culture Type, The Dallas Examiner, D Magazine, Dallas Woman, North Dallas Gazette, Fort Worth Star Telegram, Dallas Morning News, Eclipse Magazine, ONYX Magazine, The Shreveport Times, Visionary Art Collective, Visual Art Source, NBC 5 - DFW (video), and MAG-RAW Creations (video). Tezeno (b. 1960) is a Port Arthur, Texas native and graduate of Lamar University. She lives and works in Dallas.

Evita Tezeno Awarded the Dallas Art Museum Acquisition Prize

Luis De Jesus Los Angeles is thrilled to announce that Evita Tezeno has been awarded the Dallas Art Museum Acquisition Prize for her painting Joy, Compassion, and Generosity, 2022, mixed media collage and acrylic on canvas, 48 x 48 inches. We are honored to be the beneficiary of this purchase prize which is made possible by the Dallas Art Fair Foundation Acquisition Program.

Laura Karetzky received her BFA from Carnegie-Mellon University, an MFA from The New York Academy of Art, and engaged in additional training at the School of Visual Arts, The New York Studio School, the Rhode Island School of Design, as well as extensive study in Florence, Italy. Karetzky’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally at the National Arts Club, New York, NY; Sculptors Alliance, New York, NY; New York Studio School, NY; Lehman College Art Gallery, Bronx, NY; SUNY College at Old Westbury, NY; Institute of Contemporary Art at Maine College, Portland, ME; Minneapolis College of Art and Design, MN; University of La Verne Harris Art Gallery, La Verne, CA; Kantonah Museum, NY; Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, Washington D.C.; and Brandeis University, Waltham; MA.

Karetzky is a finalist for the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery 2022 Outwin Boochever Portrait Competion. Her work will be presented in “The Outwin 2022: American Portraiture Today,” an exhibition premiering at the National Portrait Gallery from April 30, 2022, through Feb. 26, 2023, before traveling to other cities in the United States. She is the recipient of several awards and fellowships including 2021 New York Studio School Artcritial Prize; 2020 New York Studio School Mercedes Matter Award; 2017 ESKFF Mana Contemporary Residency; 2014 Milton and Sally Michel Avery endowed Fellowship at Yaddo; 2011 Yaddo Fellowship; and 2009 New York Academy of Art Eric Fischl Award of Distinction. She has been the subject of feature interviews in Art Spiel, artcritical, Anti-Heroin Chic, and the Argonaut. Her work has been reviewed in the The New York Times, Hyperallergic, American Arts Quarterly, The Brooklyn Paper, and The Washington Post, among others. Laura Karetzky lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
