MARTIN DURAZO, MAX-NIGMATIX, INSTALLATION VIEW, PULSE PROJECTS
PULSE LOS ANGELES CONTEMPORARY ART FAIR, SEPTEMBER 29-OCTOBER 3, 2011

PRESS RELEASE

MARTIN DURAZO

MAX-NIGMATIX

Presented at PULSE Projects, PULSE Los Angeles Contemporary Art Fair, September 29-October 3, 2011

Transitory in nature, the idea of a party is fleeting. Moreover, there exists a parallel with the economic law of diminishing returns. The longer the festivities last the less intense the feelings of joy and reverie. The works presented in this installation further investigate ideas of what Martin Durazo calls an "aesthetic of the illicit"—contemporary society's addictions and vices, fueled by enigmas of what popular culture has created. During performances scheduled throughout each day of the fair, Durazo will use small sound-sensitive stage lasers and a MacBook Pro laptop with DJ software in order to recreate and explore night club nuances that present opportunities for an escape from reality. At other times, the exposure to light will expose the works and environment to the transcendent sobriety of reality.

Martin Durazo is a multi-media artist whose work is concerned with the grittiness of social subcultures and is best known for creating large-scale installations combining paintings, ready-made objects, video, sound, light, and performance. He is the recipient of a 2012 C.O.L.A. Individual Artists Fellowship from the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery, and a 2011 California Community Foundation Award. In 2010 was artist-in-residence at the 18th Street Arts Center in Santa Monica. A native of Los Angeles, Martin earned Bachelor of Arts degrees in English and Art from Pitzer College and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of California Los Angeles. His work has been exhibited at Mark Moore Gallery, Suzanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects, Harris Art Gallery at the University of LaVerne, Galería MDF, Mexico City, and Gallery Lara, Tokyo, and among other venues.
