BRIEF BIO

Working in video, performance, photography and installation, Bryan Zanisnik is known for building intricate tableaus out of mundane bric-a-brac that address the constantly evolving and devolving American landscape—explored through issues of aging and regression, suburban architecture, masculinity, familial relationships, Freudian psychology, and Americana culture. Critic David Duncan (Art in America) commented of Bryan Zanisnik's work that "[its] comical impartation of dubious history and catalogue of trivial possessions sidestep sentimentality while conveying a fascination with the type of inherited narrative that gets passed down in close-knit families."

Marking a strong, new direction in his work, Zanisnik's most recent photographs distort the elaborately constructed studio set with the use of mirrors and peep holes. In "Green Owls Manhattan Bridge" the set opens onto the real-life view of New York's Manhattan Bridge. Zanisnik waited until sunset to shoot this tableau, which resulted in the perfect blueprint blue seen in the views of the bridge through the studio window. Zanisnik's videos take a similar collage-like approach with the construction of loose narratives that draw from family and personal history. His room-sized installations function as a surreal tableau vivant that serve to explore the human subconscious vis-à-vis the hidden and private spaces of the home and often incorporate performances with his parents.

Bryan Zanisnik received an MFA from Hunter College and attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. He has recently exhibited and performed in New York at MoMA PS1, Sculpture Center, and the Brooklyn Museum; in Philadelphia at the Institute of Contemporary Art and the Fabric Workshop and Museum; in Miami at the De La Cruz Collection; in Los Angeles at LAXART, and internationally at the Istanbul Museum of Modern Art, the Kunsthalle Exnergasse in Vienna and the Futura Centre for Contemporary Art in Prague. He has completed residencies at the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Workspace Program, the Smack Mellon Artist Studio Program, the Macdowell Colony, the Art Omi International Artists Residency, and the Guangdong Times Museum in Guangzhou, China. In the winter of 2016 he will present a newly commissioned site-specific installation at Locust Projects in Miami, Florida. Zanisnik's work has been widely reviewed in the New York Times, Artforum, Art in America, ARTnews, Modern Painters, Time Out New York, and the Village Voice, among others. Zanisnik is included in Art21's award-winning documentary series New York Close Up, has been a featured guest on the Leonard Lopate Show on National Public Radio and is a contributing writer at Triple Canopy.
